Sample Town Population Lab

$6.95Price

Use without printing: Read the reference information, diagrams, data and questions on screen. Record your estimates, calculations and explanations in a notes app or spreadsheet, then compare them with the provided answer guidance. For activities using paper pieces or map construction, keep the supplied page as a visual reference and record the selections or design separately; a movable digital simulation is not included.

Build a town of 48 paper houses, choose a sample of 12, and see how the selection changes your estimate. This hands-on printable lab uses a complete fictional population so you can check each sample against the exact census, compare errors and explain your evidence.

Digital printable download only. You receive one ZIP with nine files. Printing, paper, scissors and other physical supplies are not included.

Build, sample and compare

Arrange 48 original house cards on four district mats. Follow six investigation cards and complete six data boards: census the town; sample the front row; change the systematic start; compare three supplied random-index lists; include every district; and create a final evidence display.

Seven fixed 12-house samples provide reproducible comparisons. Practice category counts, exact fractions, population estimates and signed error. Compare how a selection rule works rather than choosing the method that happened to give the closest answer.

What is in the download?

  • Two complete 27-page PDFs: one US Letter edition and one A4 edition. They contain the same activity; choose one paper size. That is 54 PDF pages across alternate editions, not 54 different activity pages.

  • Each edition includes setup and calculation guidance, four district mats, 48 cut-out house cards, six investigation cards, six write-on data boards, the complete 48-house census and six pages of explained answers.

  • A complete-data CSV and a sample-results CSV for optional reference or spreadsheet use. These are data copies, not extra activities.

  • A plain-text companion, README, limited-use license, product metadata and file checksums.

Who is it for?

Learners ready to count accurately, multiply and divide whole numbers, and use simple fractions. Work independently or share selecting, recording, calculating and checking roles. Go at your own pace or spread the investigations across sessions. No fixed age, grade alignment or completion time is promised.

Print and prepare

Use a printer, paper or light cardstock, scissors, a pencil and clear table space. A calculator, ordinary ruler and scrap paper for an optional fresh draw may be helpful. Print single-sided, portrait, at 100% / Actual size. Check the printed scale reference and try one house card in a mat slot before cutting the rest. Give cutting assistance as needed. No glue, tape or other kit purchase is required.

The printable pages are black and white. Category letters carry the essential information, with roof textures as a secondary cue. A no-cut route and plain-text companion are included. PDFs are static printable files, not fillable forms; tagged-PDF or assistive-technology compliance is not claimed.

Important sampling and preview notes

All houses and data are fictional. A house is one unit, not one person. The supplied random-index lists are seeded-pseudorandom teaching examples. A single accurate estimate does not prove a method is always best. This is an informal educational model, not evidence about real populations, a standardized assessment or a guarantee of learning results.

The hero shows actual included house-card excerpts; the other gallery images show complete included US Letter pages. Gallery colors are for presentation; the downloadable pages are black and white. PDF layout, arithmetic and geometry were checked digitally. The kit has not been physically printed, cut, assembled or learner-tested by its creator. Your printer scale check remains necessary.

Household or one-educator license

Use within one household, or by one educator with their own classes or one directly taught noncommercial learning group. Print reasonable copies for those learners and share files with them only in a restricted private class or group system. This is not a multi-educator, school-wide or organization-wide license. Do not resell, publicly post or redistribute the files beyond the licensed audience. Your own written answers remain yours. See the included LICENSE.txt for full terms.
